“The first step of any journey is always the hardest— and the same principle applies when rounding up cattle.” Hughie announced from horseback, his usual goofy demeanor nowhere to be found. “First, we lead our herd up the mountain until we find the perfect grazing ground for them to feed. Here, we set up camp for the night and get enough rest to lead them back down the mountain tomorrow morning. This expenditure will be led by Marshall, seeing as our gracious foreman has more important matters to attend to.”

I flushed on the spot where I stood, rubbing my arm awkwardly as I avoided everyone’s eyes. Am I keeping Callie from the one thing that matters to her?

All because I want some time alone with her? Doesn’t that make me the most self centered person on the planet?

“Soon, we will be headed into the wild. There, all the rules of the farmhouse don’t matter. Be on alert and act with caution. See you at the peak ranchers.”

We waved Hughie off as he rode to his position at the starting point, which was in front of the herd with Marshall.

The rest of my friend group walked off with Wes, who led them to the horses they had picked to ride.

The sound of gravel crunching behind me stole my attention, and I spun around to find myself face-to-face with the head rancher herself. Callie had changed into much heavier clothing— donning a leather jacket over her flannel shirt. She was wearing her riding jeans, along with leather boots that had spikes at the heel.

Icy blue eyes were all I could think about even as she led the horse towards me. It wasn’t Whisper, yet the way she handled the giant beast made me think she was that way with all animals.

“Hi. Ready to get on?” She spared me a glance as she tied the horse to the fence. “I know he isn’t Whisper, but I promise he’s just as sweet.”

I cleared my throat quickly. “I'm ready.”

She gave me a firm nod before she gave me a lift onto his back. I swung my leg over, plopping on the saddle as I tried to steady myself. “You good?”

I gave her a shaky thumbs up and she laughed as she fed the mare a treat.

Before I could hesitate further, I spoke. “T—thank you again. For choosing to ride with me. I know you’ve got your hands full with the ranch, so you didn’t have to do that—…”

“You don’t have to thank me.” She muttered as she wrung a rope into a durable circle. “Anything I can do to make you feel safer.” She peered up at me from her lashes, the sunlight pouring down on her golden hair with a glow.

You make me feel safer.

“Now scoot so he doesn’t kick us both off.”

I giggled as I nudged forward, excited as Callie settled in behind me. She smelt like sweat and hard work, and I inhaled her fresh musky scent like a hungry primate.
